A once-popular sports event is making a comeback at the Batoche national historic site.

From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Saskatchewan Louis Riel Relay took place along Saskatoon’s riverbank. Now, the event is being transplanted to Batoche, Sask., 90 kilometres northeast of the city.

« The site has a special meaning for me. My great-grandfather and grandfather both knew Louis Riel and spent much time there, » said Louise Tournier, Friends of Batoche chairperson.

« The Batoche National Park has such great history that needs to be told over and over and in many different forms to be truly appreciated. »

The Batoche relay will consist of teams participating in running, biking, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding and archery. Tournier said they are all important parts of the province’s Métis history.

« We are able to bring guests to the park to relive the important elements of our ancestors, » she said. « This event is a way to do this in a fun, festive and sociable way. »

Although there are team and individual competitor aspects, all of the challenge activities will also be open to guests to try at their leisure.

To re-launch the event, the new symbol of Louis Riel Relay Days was released.
